Manchester United Missed Chance to Pressure Chelsea

Manchester United passed up the chance to move level with Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table, drawing 0-0 with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

With Chelsea set to take on Arsenal on Sunday, United had a real opportunity to apply pressure to the champions, but Sir Alex Ferguson will be left rueing his decision to start the game with top goalscorer Dimitar Berbatov on the bench. The decision seemed all the more inexplicable given the lack of Wayne Rooney in United's matchday squad.

Ferguson introduced Berbatov at the break in place of Owen, and the Bulgarian found the net instantly, only to be correctly flagged for offside. Berbatov threatened again as the clock ticked down, but if any side deserved victory it was Sunderland as the game finished goalless.

Michael Owen rescued a point for Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson's men twice had to come from behind against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.
Owen nodded home Nani's free-kick 16 minutes from time to ensure United did not join the other victims on a weekend of shock defeats.
Yet it was hardly a pleasing outcome for Ferguson, who would have hoped for better once Nani levelled Zat Knight's early effort but instead saw his team fall behind again thanks to Martin Petrov.
As United have now conceded nine goals in five league games and trail leaders Chelsea by three points, it was not the best of weekends for them, nor an out-of-sorts Wayne Rooney, who was replaced by Federico Macheda half an hour from the end.
Saturday's results could not have worked out any better for United and the intent behind their attacking play was obvious from the first kick, but defensively they remain unconvincing.

Chelsea Crowned Premier League Champions

Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea won the Premier League title in style on the final day of the season, beating Wigan Athletic 8-0 at Stamford Bridge to set a new record of 103 goals scored in a single league campaign.

A hat-trick from Golden Boot winner Didier Drogba, who finished the season with 29 league goals, two from Nicolas Anelka, a Frank Lampard penalty and others from Salomon Kalou and Ashley Cole, left Chelsea champions and on the brink of a League and FA Cup double.

Only Portsmouth now stand in their way of a history-making season for Chelsea's Ancelotti and his team. The Blues will become only the seventh team in the history of the game to win both competitions if they can overcome Avram Grant's side at Wembley next week.

Arsenal look certain to end another season without a trophy after they lost 2-1 to Tottenham at White Hart Lane, a result which leaves them six points adrift of Chelsea. Danny Rose and Gareth Bale scored for Spurs before Nicklas Bendtner netted a late consolation

Youngster Danny Rose, making his first Premier League start, put Spurs in front after ten minutes with a rasping volley from the edge of the area after Manuel Almunia had punched clear a corner.

Gareth Bale made it two just after half-time when Arsenal switched off at the back. Bacary Sagna played Bale onside and as Defoe's pass found him inside the area he swept the ball into the net.

Robin van Persie came on for Arsenal and injected new life into their attacking play, but he was denied a goal by two brilliant Heurelho Gomes saves.

Nicklas Bendtner did pull a goal back for Arsenal with five minutes left after a cross from Theo Walcott but Spurs held on to boost their hopes of finishing fourth and clinching a Champions League spot.

Arsenal now six point behind Chelsea and two points different with Manchester United to be in third place in 2009/2010 English Premiership.

Manchester United EPL title is over

LONDON (AP)—Manchester United was held 0-0 by Blackburn to squander a chance to temporarily regain the Premier League leadership on Sunday while Portsmouth reached the FA Cup final by beating Tottenham 2-0 a day after it was relegated from the English top flight.

It turned out to be a good day for Chelsea, which stayed ahead of United in the league title race and then found out it would face Portsmouth—in financial administration and down at the foot of the Premier League standings—rather than fifth-place Tottenham in the May 15 cup final.

In one of the biggest shocks of the season, extra-time goals by Frederic Piquionne and Kevin-Prince Boateng gave cash-strapped Portsmouth victory in a dramatic semifinal at Wembley.

Manchester United's Premier League title challenge is all but over as a season that promised so much just a fortnight ago is in danger of total collapse.
Despite dominating almost all their clash with Blackburn at Ewood Park, Sir Alex Ferguson's men rarely looked like making their pressure tell.

Paul Robinson needed to make two excellent saves to deny Antonio Valencia before half-time, but afterwards, with United so desperate for the points, the former England number one had surprisingly little to do.

Not for the first time recently, Dimitar Berbatov was a major disappointment and the fact Rio Ferdinand was feeling his groin towards the end suggested a problem Fabio Capello will not want.

There are no worries for Chelsea though, who still lead the Red Devils by a point, with a game in hand, knowing the main danger to their championship aspirations now lies much closer to home, at Arsenal.

Although United had not actually lost their last three games, that is how it felt.
